Sights in Israel

One of the entrance gates to Temple Mount via the northern wall. An inscription on the gate tells us it was renovated by Sultan Issa in 1220. The Koran (Sura 2, 55-56) relates that its name is derived from the ''Mechilah'', ie: forgiveness.

The southeast corner of the Old City, the Jewish Quarter occupies about 15 acres and has been inhabited by Jews for centuries. Following the capture of the Old City by the Arabs in 1948, all Jews were expelled and their buildings destroyed.

Mount Carmel is a coastal mountain range in northern Israel stretching from the Mediterranean Sea towards the southeast. Archaeologists have discovered ancient wine and oil presses at various locations on Mt. Carmel.

The Shrine of the Book displays the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of the greatest archeological finds in the world. In 1947, earthen urns containing scrolls were discovered, apparently written in the days of the Issym.
